To work around this issue, you can enable the Configure keep-alive connection interval policy in the Computer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsRemote Desktop ServicesRemote Desktop Session HostConnections group policy folder. If you enable this policy, you must enter a keep-alive interval. The keep-alive interval determines how often, in minutes, the server checks the session state.

• When communications between clients and RD Session Host servers require the highest level of encryption, use FIPS-compliant encryption.
• Any encryption level settings you configure in Group Policy override the settings you configured using the Remote Desktop Services Configuration tool. Also, if you enable the System cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing policy, this setting overrides the Set client connection encryption level policy. The system cryptography policy is in the Computer ConfigurationWindows SettingsSecurity SettingsLocal PoliciesSecurity Options folder.
• When you change the encryption level, the new encryption level takes effect the next time a user signs in. If you require multiple levels of encryption on one server, install multiple network adapters and configure each adapter separately.
• To verify your certificate has a corresponding private key, go to Remote Desktop Services Configuration, right-click the connection that you want to view the certificate for, select General, then select Edit. After that, select View certificate. When you go to the General tab, you should see the statement, 'You have a private key that corresponds to this certificate' if there's a key. You can also view this information with the Certificates snap-in.
• FIPS-compliant encryption (the System cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing policy or the FIPS Compliant setting in Remote Desktop Server Configuration) encrypts and decrypts data sent between the server and client with the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-1 encryption algorithms that use Microsoft cryptographic modules. • The High setting encrypts data sent between the server and client by using strong 128-bit encryption.
• The Client Compatible setting encrypts data sent between the client and the server at the maximum key strength supported by the client.
• The Low setting encrypts data sent from the client to the server using 56-bit encryption.

There are times when you might need to remotely connect to a PC using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). RDP has been a part of Windows since the XP days and it provides an easy way to connect from one PC or device to another to retrieve files or provide technical support.

Here’s an example of Using Android Remote Desktop to access a Windows 10 PC.

But what if you need to connect to your Windows PC at home or the office while on the go? There are plenty of remote apps to choose from in the store, but here’s a look at using the official Microsoft Remote Desktop app from your Android phone.

Note: Home versions of Windows are not supported. Only Pro and Windows Server editions and you can see a full list of supported Microsoft systems at this link. Here I’m using the RD app on a Nexus 6P running Android Nougat 7.1.1 to connect to a Windows Home Server. Your experience may vary depending on your phone model, version of Android, and the OS of the remote computer. Still, the steps and instructions are virtually the same.

Using Microsoft Remote Desktop for Android

Now download the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from Google Play. Tap the “+” icon on the upper-right side, select desktop, then wait while the app scans your local network for connected PCs. If the one you want to connect to doesn’t come up, you’ll need to add it manually.

The first time you start a remote connection you’ll probably see a security dialog about the certificate not being verified. Make sure to check the Never ask again for connections to this PC option and then tap Connect. You know what you’re doing, no reason for Windows to be constantly nagging you.

Then you’ll need to sign in to the remote PC with your Windows login credentials.

There you go. You’re now connected remotely to the Windows PC you wanted and use the controls of the Remote Desktop app to get your work done.

Using this app on a handset isn’t exactly a user-friendly experience due to a lack of screen real estate. You wouldn’t want to spend hours working on a PC or server — but it definitely works in a pinch at important times when you need it.
